  1. The Admin Menu is a copyrighted script by Emmett Sauer and Linux Business
  2. Systems.  It is Freeware, but if redistributed must contain the original
  3. files and notices.  As I will try and keep updating it as time goes on.

  6. I started this small but helpful project to aid my Linux Business System
  7. clients in administrating their systems.  I have other scripts that are also
  8. in use by my clients, that I will release as soon as I can.
  9.  
  10. This script makes the administrator's duties a little easier and less
  11. complicated.  Most new users to Linux are also new to any type of *nix
  12. system, so just getting their programs to run is a chore sometimes.  The
  13. script (Admin Menu) uses other available binaries and some scripts to do a
  14. lot of the work, I could not see myself trying to redo some already good
  15. stuff.

  19. Released new updated version 1.2 and it was changed cosmetically to 
  20. give more flow.  The news-mail option is not ready for release as of
  21. this date, but will be soon.

  26. Files included in the Admin package are:

  29.     admin.txt  -   This text file
  30.     dialog     -   The useful Dialog v0.5 application
  31.     TexMgr       -   A good TeX menu script with my modifications
  32.     git       -   A GNU file manager and more
  33.     procinfo   -   A system processes viewer
  34.     news       -   A system news application
  35.     LBU       -   Linux Backup Utility
  36.     sac       -   System accounting tool
  37.     dfck       -   Filesystem check script
  38.     load       -   System load checker
  39.     usrdsksp   -   User disk space checker
  40.     login-scripts  - Additions to help tracking logins

  42. I will assume that you have networking installed and all related files, 
  43. also assume you have diskquotas installed.  I will not attempt to include
  44. these as I have no idea what version of Linux you use.

  47. INSTALLATION
  48.  
  49. I installed all my scripts and binaries in /sbin, make sure you have access
  50. to /var/adm directory and 'touch /var/adm/Admin.Log' to establish that file.
  51. Next setup your news system as per that package and texmgr the same.
  52. Compile and install the git, the procinfo and dialog packages.

  54. The menu uses some defaults that you may want to change, the default GID is
  55. 100, the UID is the last entry in the passwd file plus 1, the home directory
  56. of new users is /home/users/$UserName, the default shell is /bin/bash and
  57. all new user required files are copied from the /etc/skel directory.  I have
  58. installed a new AEDIT and EDITOR variables, but you just have to set the
  59. AEDIT to your favorite editor.   You may have to make sure that the EDITOR
  60. env variable is set in  your .profile.

  63. The menu allows the admin to list, add and delete users and groups.  It
  64. allows the admin to check on most all system processes including the
  65. network.  It also has some unique print management features including the
  66. processing of tex, dvi and ps files (via texmgr).

  68. And it keeps a log of some of the changes, more to be added in the next
  69. release. And in the logging feature it allows you to manually add notes to
  70. the log file.

  72. I feel that it is easy to use and maintain, the installation can be a bit
  73. trying for the new user and I am working on an easier install.
